DIABETES UK STIGMA GLOBAL MAJORITY GROUPS

Assumptions and judgements are frequently made about people living with diabetes and unfortunately that stigma is more prevalent amongst people from Global Majority groups. Research was required to understand and explore the prevalence, experiences and impact of stigmatising attitudes, language and behaviour towards diabetes amongst people who are South Asian, Black African and Black Caribbean.

We designed a participant led approach to ensure participants were able to participate comfortably.  In most instances, this resulted in an online individual interview. Additionally, participants were given the option to take part in a post-task diary, where they could document any incidents of stigma they experienced over a period of time. The findings were then quantified in a sensitively designed survey.

The insights we gained from the interviews and diaries were used to inform Diabetes UK's actions towards supporting  those from Global Majority backgrounds living with diabetes.

    TARGET OVARIAN CANCER SUPPORT NEEDS

Target Ovarian Cancer wanted to understand the experiences of living with ovarian cancer and ovarian cancer care amongst a diverse group of individuals from different backgrounds in order to ensure the charity’s services and support are accessible and relevant.

With a particular interest in lesser heard groups, we spoke to Black and Asian women, LGBTQ+, those living in rural locations and women living with a disability. Through sensitive depth interviews with women who have have had ovarian cancer we explored both their practical and emotional experiences. Specific and tangible insight has enabled Target Ovarian Cancer to review the type of support they’re offering to ensure it is suitable for all women who need it.

    COMIC RELIEF NATIONAL ENGAGEMENT

In preparation for Sport Relief 2018, Comic Relief wanted to get feedback from sports clubs, sports centres and leisure centres on level of interest for participation and how they might promote, encourage engagement, and monetise activity.

Telephone interviews were undertaken with those in charge of fundraising activities within the club. No clubs had previously engaged with Comic Relief, so establishing initial barriers was also key.

Specific feedback was provided enabling Comic Relief to design materials that targeted sports groups and clubs, and provided the necessary information needed to support participation across the club and members.
